SPLEEN

Ha! Well aren’t you something!

You’re asking me to be your friend.
Forgive my lapse into the colloquial,
But I lack another way of putting it.

Where? Oh! Where do you get the nerve?
What unmitigated gall propels you,
When you have so far fallen from mark,
The common decency to comport yourself
Within any norm of self respect,
Concern for the well being of any other,
Wanting any notion, regard for truth?

Yeow! You’re on Mars, babe, total space out!

Remember that May Day,
Our first real Holiday together,
Our first full day together
After your return from the homeland,
After we not having seen each other for seven months,
Not having seen each other for seven months

You treated me like…, well I must
Here I must resort to vulgarity, the vulgar,
Alone, the adjective modifies your behaviors.

You treated me like shit,
You were skilled in your ways,
You started on the offensive. Picky, picky, picky,
It must be a symptom, for it certainly
Points to the way you eat your food.

And you played your hand skillfully,
Practiced as you were in the art, prevarication,
Playing me on for months on end,
Lie after lie and I never caught on, then
Hustle me for vittles, a tramp,
And when I objected to having had to pick up every tab,
Even the extra super-market food
You were buying for your room,
You told me some bullshit about
How fair your father treats women,
His generosity and free spending
Until I reminded you -- you had already told me --
How a court order was necessary,
Him to support his ex-wife, and kids
Overwhelmed by his strength of character, alienated,
One son and three daughters,
Never mind the grand children, no mention of them,
His other family never speaks to him at all.
It's a nice story, huh?

You, you had me pay for food, food
You ate alone in your hostel.

You offered me nothing in return,
Except another sad story, a sordid tale,
And like so much else you revealed to me,
Less than candid, not yet the real truth,
That you would drop later, the other, proverbial shoe,
The evil of your partaking, of a long-time affair
With a man who proved your alter ego,
Who proved it over the years,
His love was equal to yours.

Both of you liars, what a lovely affair,
Match made in heaven, I am surprised,
Struck by the short duration, only five years,
When you two lovers seemed so well suited,
Sweetie, how do you do it? Remain absent
From his arms! You, poor child, I know you
Still love him, hanker for the mutual abuse,
Listen, Misses, where talk exists there’s desire,

Oh when Stanley’s standing by, my, my,
The dreadful things you say about him,
That awful man and all his lying,
His constant running in debt to you,
And the way he supposedly with his sex abused you,
But who knows, who knows what’s really happening,
Dealing with you one never hears the truth.

The stories, oh the stories!
Remember that date with Mora?
Out of the clear blue, you had to spend the night,
She was a long-time girlfriend, you said.
But I had never heard of her before,
I had to be reminded of the story of your meeting,
I don’t believe I ever heard of her again.

Mora who? I questioned. Let me meet her
Or tell me her last name. Ha!
You, you would never deign to answer,
Your response was silence, you’re haughty that way.

Learned at home when native in your native land,
The terror, the fundamental disquiet,
I guess few may imagine, how desperate your life,
How ill at ease, how you must bury it,
“Let’s spend the day shopping,” you say,
“Go searching from store to store
“There you see, you know me,”
“It’s what I am like anyway.”

A running dialogue you repeat
And convince no one, not even yourself.

Your home here in the states, your lessons,
You studied hard, gained Advanced Placement,
But what you learned best was deception,
The past arises each time the telephone announces
Your mother, you lie to your mother,
You, a woman approaching the age of Jesus, Crucified,
Still you are unable to reveal truth to your mother.

It’s all laughable, were it so awful, terribly sad.

You could not tell your mother
You were living with me, home with me and in my bed,
That I had touched you in so many intimate ways,
That you had professed your love for me,
And solemnly promised to cherish, honor and behave,

You told me you would make me proud,
And you would become a woman of parts,
You claimed soul of piety and beauty.
You said honest, not to worry,
You had me believe you loved me.

Yet you misrepresented your intentions.
You continually lied to your mother,
Chasing back and forth, duplicity,
When the telephone rang you lived at the hostel,
Not with me at this address what was to be our home.
All under some guise, you were very tricky.

But the biggest lie, the lie tell yourself,
About the past being the past,
About your ability to forget it,
That there exists no such thing as sexual trauma,
Your claim, everything that had happened,
As if you were saying, I need no help,
My involvement with that man, the horror,
Has no impact, it neither affects me or my character.

You want to be my friend,
You say it over and again,
You say it’s what you always wanted,
But you make no effort to prove it,
No recovery or willingness to accept
The central fact you must face the sickness,
It rules you and your biggest lie, your failure
To recognize all your wrongs,
Your living a lie, a symptom of the thing,
The monster within who plots your death,
Here is the real truth, your disease it kills you.

You saw my conduct, how I lead with my heart,

Suspended the critical faculty to woo you with love,
You commented praise worthily
About the propriety of my ways,
And you saw how I raised my child.

Princess, and that’s a title your heart’s fancy,
Princesses, they bellow and world,

Whole world does see, my marvelous girl,
Your life now public and up for rebuke,
Your lousy demeanor and ultimate want,

The lowness of your family life soon immortal,
Your treachery to live forever in this published verse.

You say you want to be my friend,
Yet do not recognize bosom requires
Both honesty and accommodation, and you,
My love, have not inclination for either.

MOOD SUBJUNCTIVE,
Edited

Don't get me wrong.

Should I appear distracted,
Look knocked out by the light.
You make a very strong performance,
A singularity round whose axis my mind spins.

I remember once, years ago,
When I landed in New York,
After living a year and half in Europe,
How the neon of America
Seemed so awesomely garish, and bright.
Yet, when I close my eyes and picture it,

All seems pale before the radiance of your face.

Two people may meet for morning breakfast,
Look out the café's window at the steady rain,
Walk here and there along avenues of
Inviting store fronts, and before the day is over
Fall into hopeless passion one for the other,
As though there be something in the air,
Perhaps some electromagnetic charge.
So the occasional electricity might overwhelm us.

Or cupid steals behind fixtures of thoroughfares.
(That day I spied him crouched near a mailbox,
When we began to walk main street in Point Pleasant!)

The winged child pulls from his quiver arrows.
They drip wet with potion. Once he aims
And shots them, grievously they tear mortal flesh
Making for a ruckus extraordinaire
And expectations suddenly become great.

This romance now so hard upon me,
This love I must ardently profess is, if you please,
Couched, subjunctive, a mood,
A posture of grammar I assume so to temper
My over-wrought affection and quiet
The immodest verse and elevated parlance,

It provides relief for my assuming prophetic mantle,
The all too far-out attitude, the conceit
Whose command animates this verse,
And were I not to employ this principle of language,
One might believe that I be shameless.

Understand. I solely express my own wish and desire,
All I say remains contingent,
Of a mind still hypothetical and dependent.

I do not use the imperative, I make no demand.
I have no special outcome in mind.

I live in the fortress called Zion,
And come from it in the Pilgrims' coat and hat.
I look in the mirror and see their collar and tie.
And, like those passengers on board the Mayflower,
I know the Lord to be my helper. I fear not.

Who among your former friends has ever said it better?

And were you to live long and hearty life,
As all actuaries predict,
What future friend might ever say it better?

And should you for a moment consider,

This lyric arrive, transcending everyday concerns,
That it join, Sentiment Supreme, Him, the real pilot,

When we drove in the white, Ford van and crossed
Jersey's North shore highways, while the brown,

Oh that magic, gentle, dream-like, living, pale, ethereal,

And somewhat golden light accented the downpours,
Whose constant unleashed falling, seemed more
Like the storm the Lord had promised Noah,
Than any explicable, temporary weather.

Wie es eigentlich gewesen war.
'The carriage held but just us -- and immortality.'

And since we first drove around together,
Though it is months ago,
It feels shorter than the day,
I first surmised the engine's mounts
Were tied to point, and we, too, were belted,
Hurled straight ahead in covenant with eternity.

HEART'S JOURNEY

HEART'S JOURNEY

Do you trust me?

Do you have a single doubt,
I love you? Do I forsake you,
Or fail to keep my word?

I feel within me,
Light has dispelled darkness.
My conscience’s clear.

For a thousand different reasons,
And just one, I love you most of all,
I love you, because you’re you.

I sing like Elvis, but I am here,
God lets me live, I sing the song.
I love you the way you are, dear.
I have no rhyme or reason.
No matter what they say about me,
Most of all I love you,
I love you, because you’re you.

But now what else am I to do?
Will every other’s face
Be now and forever but second best?

I fall to terrible truth,
I am no good, no good to any one,
I’m no good to anyone after loving you.

On our first date,
It rained the entire day.
We drove Jersey’s back roads and highways.
We talked business.
We praised the special light,
And thanked God for blessing,
For the Grace, that befell us.

Though we are separated now,
You have my love. I adore you.

You might send a Private Eye
To track my days and nights,
You might send a troop,
Special Forces to search and seek
Any rugged terrain where I might hide,
Give them night vision goggles
So to visit every nook,
Every recess of my soul,
And all they will find, my love,
They will only find, only, my love for you.

DID YOU KNOW? Sweet Talk

DID YOU KNOW?
Sweet Talk

Out in Arizona my Dad,
He grew roses;
He embraced the great merit,
Loved to say
How he enjoyed cultivating his own garden.

That spot he tended along side the house,
It was the love of his retirement.

I saw those roses disporting,
Performing and they were real pretty,
But I must say aloud,
They never flowered, like you,
They never looked the way
You looked tonight, darling.

Though this verse be trivia,
Fitting definition, thing of small importance,
It swears truth,
The whole truth and nothing but the truth,
It represents term of endearment.

WITHOUT YOU, Geroge St. Heartbreak

WITHOUT YOU,
George St. Heartbreak

I am sick with rheum and aches,
And a congestion of the lungs.
I cough constantly.

Insomnia stains my eye sockets, like charcoal,
And for the first time in my life
I actually look older than my real age.

Years ago, when still a child
I read auguries in the snarled pattern of clouds,
And practiced divination in how snow
Accumulated to subtle difference of height
On the post rails surrounding the corral.

I watched the frozen breathe of horses,
Looking for some hope of bliss but abstracted
Solely gloom and heart brake.

Today, desperate and preoccupied, I try
To pick out the future from the way
Antennae wire twists against the white walls,
And falls up and down
Along the molding in my bedroom.

All omens promise bad luck.

My mind has fallen into moat
And bad mood has dungeoned me.

I keep to the apartment all day,
Flipping over playing cards,
Looking for my destiny every time,
A queen of hearts appears from the deck.

It's going okay tonight, not too bad.

"Stanley, don’t be wearin’ that stickpin
Opals are always considered unlucky!"

My luck isn't very good as it is.
I don't think me wearing an opal
Changes the out come of life that much.

No eulogy for this affair of heart.
No photographs left here for me to remember us.

I see no people down the street to witness
Me drive off in the Ford alone.

Rain and cold, happy couples walk the avenues
Huddling close, tight, one to another.

Your name has been deleted from the speed dial.
It has vanished from my computer screen.

I guess these musings are the closest
It may ever come to a biography of us.

I must wonder if this whole fantastic romance,
I once imagined, amounts to no more, now,
Than footnote in this big book of my own.

No children will be named for us,
Not that you wanted it anyhow,
The children being named after either you or me.

No admission will ever be charged
For entrance to the home where we once lived,
Spoke ardently of love one for the other,
And I tempted verse to celebrate us for the ages.

And despite all the noise coming from the street,
All the appointments I have to keep this evening,
I can only lie on the floor and look to the ceiling.

The light is going out of my eyes.

Some people want every thing,
Lots of people want it all.
I just want you, your love, dear,
When life goes on without you,
I've got nothing at all!

HEART'S ON FIRE, Lunch at Panera

HEART'S ON FIRE,
Lunch at Panera

The streets are joyous, full of fun.
I hear laughter wherever I go.

I could not ask for more.
I walk to the door of our home,
Then, before I enter,
I picture you and hear your warm, ‘Hello!’

With racing mind and energetic flesh –
I can not believe it, the delight!
I burn intensely! Heart’s on fire!
Something here inside can not be denied.

You want to stay, to be my friend.

When we sit down for sandwiches
And the simple glass of water,
Two washed apples for desert,
We say that future ages might note,
Our table talk was bound for grandeur,
Mere words attain immortality,
We live well beyond lunchtime hour.

Everything we do dissolves the difference,
We loose distinction between yours and mine.

I see out the window,
A bright light illuminates the scene.
I need no coin for the wishing well.
My goal is close at hand.

I have never witnessed
Such contentment on a woman’s face
.
The web radio forecasts sunny days.
Now I know the poet’s proclamation,
The meaning of new morning,
Grace so freely disposed that though
I, unworthy and lost, learned
Vocabulary of redemption, reborn,
The bounty of your great love saved me.

Despite your troubles and your travels,
We laugh together
No matter the physical distance between us.
A part of you always stays with me.

I take you in my arms and hold you,
As I hold you in this verse of mine.
Let me take you in my arms and tell you
How much I have missed you,
I miss you so much since we have been apart.

RESPOND TO THIS VIDEO, A Poem

RESPOND TO THIS VIDEO,
A POEM

Respond to this video.
Tell me, dear audience,
Tell me what you think,
Or tell me what you believe.
I can’t be friends with her
She is no friend to me.

Tell me what to do.

It’s not she’s bad,
Or evil beyond belief;
She has broken every promise,
No regard for holy vow,
But the real truth behind her lies,
She has a hard time copin’,
Livin’ in the regular world,
Bein’ like all the other girls,
Who fit in the regular world.

Tell me, dear audience,
Tell me what to do!
My heart’s been rendered,
It has been broken in two.

‘Oh, you’re such a pretty girl,
Why are you so skinny?’
That’s what the ladies ask
When she just standin’ there,
That’s what the ladies ask
When she just standin’ there,
Standin’ there waitin’ for the bus.

Let me tell you what she said,
I tell you, dear audience,
What she once revealed to me,
She said she’s always starvin’
That is how she got that way,
I’ve seen her get thinner,
Thinner by the day,
She can not finish her dinner,
She doesn’t care what she weighs.

Let me whisper a secret,
Maybe it will clear the air,
The first piece of furniture,
The first thing I bought for this house
It was a white electronic scale,
She will not step on the scale.

Her period stopped long ago,
But no problem, take a pill,
Tweak the hormone and, anyway,
Just what’s so important,
Why the big deal?
Really, I can hear her say it,
Just as if she where talking here,
Now I’ve got it in goin’,
No problem with my monthly flow!

Respond to this video
Tell me, dear audience,
Tell me what you think,

Or tell me what you believe.
I can’t be friends with her
She can’t be friend to self.

It’s so awful, it’s weird,
I am sure she still loves me.

Will she ever be carefree again?

Can it be she’s really dyin’,
Dear God, I fear it’s true,
But she runs for miles,
Goes to the gym every other day,
My heart is broken,
All I can do is pray.

I can’t be friends with her,
She can’t be friend to self,
What else can I do?
What am I missin’,
Is there something I might do?
I never doubted her beauty!
Please, tell me, tell me,
-- I love her! –
Is there anything,
If there is anything I can do?
